TIM CANTY, MD
MEDICAL DIRECTOR & FOUNDER

Dr. Canty specializes in treating patients with back pain, neck pain and other severe pain disorders. He is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiologists in the area of Pain Medicine.

DIRECTOR OF BEHAVIORAL HEALTH

Dr. Kent, is a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in the evaluation and treatment of psychological conditions that coincide with chronic pain, physical disability, and prolonged medical conditions.

TIM CANTY, MD MEDICAL DIRECTOR & FOUNDER

Dr. Canty specializes in treating patients with back pain, neck pain and other severe pain disorders. He is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiologists in the area of Pain Management.

Dr. Canty uses the most advanced techniques available to relieve spinal pain such as that caused by fractures, arthritis, degenerative discs, and spinal stenosis. He also treats patients with severe chronic pain due to nerve damage, traumatic injuries, and reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD). His practice reflects his strong expertise in the treatment of resistant pain where previous therapies have been unsuccessful.

He completed his Interventional Pain Management fellowship training at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. Prior to that, he completed his residency in Anesthesiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

At Harvard Medical School, Dr. Canty was an instructor in Anesthesiology. He was also an attending physician at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was recently honored with the Inaugural 2009 Citizenship Award for his contributions to the hospital. He currently serves as the Associate Director of Pain Management at Staten Island University Hospital.

Dr. Canty is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, The American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, The American Medical Association and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society (top 5% of medical school class). He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center. Internationally, he is a Fellow of Interventional Pain Practice and member of the World Institute of Pain Society. In New York, he was elected to the New York Medical Society’s Committee for Workers Compensation and No Fault guidelines as well as the Committee for Young Physicians. He also serves as an expert consultant on emerging technologies in pain management for the GLG consulting group and has authored several journal articles and book chapters focusing on the best practice for alleviating pain and performing regional block anesthesia.

In addition to his work within the United States, Dr. Canty has been a part of many medical relief missions to Venezuela, El Salvador, and Mexico with groups such as Rotaplast International, performing surgical treatments on indigent children.

Dr. Kent DIRECTOR OF BEHAVIORAL HEALTH

Dr. Kent is a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in the evaluation and treatment of psychological conditions that coincide with chronic pain, physical disability and prolonged medical conditions. Dr. Kent understands the impact of these conditions permeates through most aspects of his patient’s lives. For those suffering, these conditions often limit their ability to exercise, sleep, work, manage their finances, and sustain their relationships. Therefore, they are at significantly higher risk for developing psychological conditions including anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress. Dr. Kent, is an expert in the application of evidence based psychological treatments including Cognitive-Behavior therapy, Rational-Emotive therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment therapy to help his patients cope with their conditions, and facilitate them to lead full, healthy, and happy, lives in spite of their conditions.

Dr. Kent is also an expert psychological/neuropsychological assessment. He routinely performs comprehensive evaluations for pre-spinal stimulator evaluations, clearance for bariatric surgery, capacity for consent of medical treatment, confirmation of differential psychiatric diagnoses, and identification cognitive/neuropsychological deficits resulting from acquired brain injury or other neurological issues.

Dr. Kent earned his doctorate of psychology from St. John's University. He completed his clinical psychology internship at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center in Brooklyn New York where he specialized in clinical neuropsychology and rehabilitation psychology. Dr. Kent completed his post-doctoral training at AHRC where he gained further training in the assessment and treatment of patients with chronic neurological, cognitive, and developmental impairment. Just prior to joining CSP, Dr. Kent served as a staff psychologist for Nassau University Medical Center’s outpatient Federally Qualified Health Center where he functioned as liaison for behavioral health service within primary medical services.

Dr. Kent has presented at many national conferences on Rational Emotive psychotherapy and on the role of “acceptance and commitment” in treatment outcomes for physically disabled patients. He is a member of the American Psychological Association (APA), APA division 22. (Rehabilitation psychology), and the New York State Psychological Association.
